What is Jobs Made Real
Jobs Made Real is a website developed and owned by Chop's Teen Club, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in Santa Rosa, California. Jobs Made Real is part of the Chop's Teen Club Workforce Program, designed to aid teens in discovering their career path.
The website features videos of people describing and engaged in doing their jobs. The idea for the website was created in response to teens saying they do not know what people really do in their jobs, and therefore find it difficult to decide on a career direction.
The website features thousands of videos of people doing their jobs and provides statistical data on job forecast and career information. The website is educational in nature, while also engaging with elements of entertainment.
How it works
The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) categorizes all jobs into about 1,000 titles. The BLS and its sister organization O*NET provides a wealth of information for each job title, including skills needed, personality type match, typical salary, job outlook, education, and schools that provide training for that job.
We have taken that information and created a database that links thousands of selected YouTube job/career videos to their respective job title. Filtering of videos can be done based on salary and education goals, personality type and city/zip code.
The inclusion of videos in the "Chop's Choices" category is based on an algorithm we devised which weights the average salary, job outlook and educational requirements for each job title, based on BLS data. It is Chop's subjective selection of jobs.
All videos have been screened to insure that content is appropriate for teens as young as 13 years old.
What is the purpose of Jobs Made Real?
One of the core values of Chop's Teen Club is to provide opportunities to shape teens' futures, and a belief that teens deserve the opportunity to learn skills needed to obtain meaningful work and become contributing members of the community. Jobs Made Real was designed to engage, educate and inspire teens to learn about jobs and careers in a way they like to learn.
Our tag line By Teens for Teens is the direct result of receiving input from dozens of teens on the look, feel and content of the website.
